Beginner riding a gentle green wave toward shore at Batu Bolong beach, Canggu

If you’re looking for surf lessons in Canggu, chances are you’ll end up at Batu Bolong — and for good reason. This stretch of sand is where most people in Bali catch their very first wave, and it’s the beach we’ve called home since 2016.

Here’s everything a first-timer needs to know about learning to surf at Batu Bolong.

Why Batu Bolong is the best beach for beginners

Batu Bolong is a soft, sandy-bottom beach break — exactly what you want when you’re starting out. There’s no reef and no rocks, just soft white water that rolls a long way toward the shore, giving you plenty of gentle, forgiving waves to practise your pop-up on.

The waves closer to the beach are perfect for complete beginners, while cleaner shoulders sit a little further out for when you’re ready to progress. One beach that grows with you — from your very first pop-up to your first green wave.

What a surf lesson at Batu Bolong looks like

A typical beginner surf lesson in Canggu with us runs like this:

  • On the sand first. We start with a short, simple briefing — water safety, how to lie on the board, and how to pop up. Nothing complicated.
  • Into the water with a coach beside you. You’re never alone. An instructor stays right next to you, helps you into the wave, and calls “up!” at the right moment.
  • Standing up. Most of our students stand up and ride the white water on their very first session. Seriously.

We keep groups small, use stable soft-top boards, and match the session to your pace and comfort level.

The best time and tide to surf Batu Bolong

Batu Bolong works on almost every tide, which is part of what makes it so beginner-friendly. That said, mid-to-high tide in the morning is usually the friendliest window — the water is calmer, the line-up is quieter, and the light is beautiful.

Because tides shift daily, we book your lesson around the best window for that day. Just tell us your dates and we’ll find the right time.

What’s included and what to bring

Every surf lesson includes the board, rash guard, and water. All you need to bring is:

  • Swimwear (worn under the rash guard)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • A towel and a change of clothes
  • A good mood 🌊
